When Harry Potter
hit the silver screen and the glitzy marketing of Hollywood, did it enter a new phase of storytelling or amplify the themes already set down in J.K. Rowling's series of books? How has
Harry Potter been affected by Hollywood's version of the story? Last year in the first of the
Harry Potter lecture series*, Dr. Stephens analyzed why people are so attracted to the
Harry Potter stories. In this lecture, she will use C.G. Jung's concepts of analytical psychology to analyze the themes and characters in the books to date. Four of the seven planned books have already been published. This leaves considerable room for possible shifts in character development and sub-plots. Given what we already know, what thematic twists and turns can we expect in the remaining three volumes? Many of Jung's psychological formulations give probable hints. Information, including the endings, from all four books will be discussed. A basic knowledge of the
Harry Potter story will be assumed for this lecture. Therefore, you are encouraged to read at least one of the books, all of which are available at the C.G. Jung Bookstore, before coming to the lecture. |
