The C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles
and the OPUS Archives and Research Center present:

The Era of the Goddess: From Womb to Tomb

Presented by Elise Collins-Shields, Ph.D., Michele Daniel, Ph.D. and Julie Sgarzi, Ph.D.

Artifacts discovered in old Europe during prehistoric times indicate that religious life was centered around the Goddess. From the upper Paleolithic into the Neolithic period, these images of the goddess suggest that her functions and aspects focused on the generation and nourishment of life, destruction and death, and regeneration. OPUS Archives and Research Center will bring materials from the Marija Gimbutas Collection demonstrating these functions and aspects of the Goddess.

Elise will review the "story" of Marija Gimbutas the person and present an overview of the amazing breadth of her work and contributions, Michele will present a consideration of the archetypal patterns that are manifested in these early material artifacts. Julie will conclude with reflections upon the cultural aspects of the matriarchal and goddess mythology and the significance of the ?goddess? sculptures that have been recently unearthed.

Course Objectives:

  • Identify images that represent the generation, death and regenerative functions of the Goddess
  • Recognize the significance of different images depicting the Goddess in upper Paleolithic and Neolithic periods
  • Describe the way in which the relationship of the archetypal patterns to the images demonstrates the symbolic functioning of the religious instinct
