In the Valley of the Shadow of Death:
Ego and Self in Sickness and Health

Presented by Steven J. Frank, Ph.D.

An encounter with death often has the effect of allowing the individual to contemplate what is essential to one's life, as well as a new awareness of what has been taken for granted. Drawing from his own experience with cancer (multiple myeloma) and a stem cell, Dr. Frank will reflect on the impact of an encounter with death on the relationship between the ego and the Self. He will discuss his use of mediation, visualization, and active imagination as tools to access inner resources and the support and meaning he derived from the Jewish prayer, the Shema, and Psalms 23 and 30.

Course Objectives:

  • Describe what is meant by the ego's relationship to the Self
  • Give an example of how illness can affectthe-Self axis
  • Describe how active imagination can be helpful to a person dealing with illness
