Marie-Louise von Franz, the Swiss Jungian analyst and close collaborator with Jung, believed that fairy tales are collective dreams and the purest and simplest expression of the collective unconscious. They represent the natural wisdom of the ancients and, like dreams, utilize a symbolic language to connect us to the transpersonal or archetypal dimension of the psyche. Jung believed that a familiarity with myths, fairy tales and folk legends is crucial for analytic work as a means of developing a deeper relationship with the unconscious.
Course Objectives:
- Describe what is meant by the archetypal or transpersonal dimension of the psyche
- Give an example of how a fairy tale can represent an unconscious process
- Give an example of a how a fairy tale utilizes symbolic language
