The puer aeternus (eternal boy) archetype manifests both positively and
negatively. We will focus primarily on “the problem of the puer,” as Marie-Louise von Franz has put it—the difficulty men can have in moving into
mature adulthood. Using film clips and music, we will explore some common puer “personalities” (the Charming Puer, the Nature Puer, the Spiritual Puer, the Malignant Puer) and how they are experienced in relationships. We will also address the “problem of the Wendys,” i.e., women or partners who,
hoping for true intimacy and commitment, work hard to take care of their Peter Pan-like puers, only to end up unfulfilled.
Jon-Patrik Pedersen, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist who has practiced in Pasadena for over twenty years. His work with male clients, as well as students at institutions such as California Institute of Technology, has afforded him insight into the challenges many men face in moving into adulthood. Other topics he has lectured on included Understanding the Scientific Mind; Playing in the Field of Dreams; and Understanding Male Psychology.
