When an individual is confronted with overwhelming psychic pain or anxiety, one's usual defenses are stretched and sometimes shattered. What was
previously unthinkable has now become reality. Feelings of dissociation,
disintegration, fragmentation, a sense of unnameable dread, and even a fear of a dissolution of the self are not uncommon. In this series we will examine some of the ways of working with trauma in the consulting room from a variety of perspectives.
