In the series Clinical Issues:
Presented by Robert Moradi, M.D.
Following a superficial suicide attempt, a male patient had a series of nightmares which revealed the depth of his desire for self-annihilation as a result of a failed romantic relationship. This patient's struggle to metabolize unbearable pain and loss was reflected in his dreams with increasing intensity and despair. In this presentation, we will look at the predictive and integrative function of dreams, using the case of failed romantic love.
Course Objectives:
- Identify suicidal themes in dreams
- Describe ways in which the unconscious responds to unbearable loss
- Demonstrate how a recurrent nightmare contains both premonitory and integrative functions
