In the series Clinical Issues:

Sandplay and Trauma

Presented by Sachiko Taki-Reece, M.F.T., Ed.D.

Sandplay is a form of active imagination in which miniatures are used to create a scene in a sandbox. This process is largely non-verbal, and relies on the psyche's ability to create an outer manifestation of an inner experience. In this case presentation, we will focus on the traumatic separation of a young boy from his mother and sister at age six. His single mother was no longer able to take care of her children due to suffering from cancer. He was sent to live with his paternal grandparents in Los Angeles far from his home in Chicago. We will focus on images of wounding and healing in the trays that he made during his treatment at age ten.

Course Objectives:

  • Discuss how Sandplay can be utilized in the treatment of trauma
  • Describe the trauma of premature separation for a young child
  • Analyze how the Sandtrays developed from initial images of wounding towards healing

Sachiko Taki-Reece, M.F.T., Ed.D., is a Jungian analyst and faculty member of the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles and a teaching member of the International Society of Sandplay Therapy. Sachiko has published Sandplay research articles and book chapters in English and Japanese.
