The Seven Deadly Sins: Despair

Presented by John Dobbs, Ph.D.

Despair is the bastard cousin of the Seven Deadly Sins; Aquinas subsumed it under Sloth in his list. Though it was repeatedly included among them, anyone who has been both slothful and despairing knows otherwise. In April, the cruelest month, in the next of his talks on the Seven (“or Eight”) Deadly Sins, John Dobbs examines the sin of despair — to be differentiated from mourning, depression and sadness — as it burdens and obstructs the therapy process.

Course Objectives:

  • Differentiate clinical examples of mourning, depression, and sadness as contrasted with the sin of despair
  • Discuss the alchemical state of nigredo as it emerges in therapy and the life course
  • Explain the distinction between neurotic and existential despair

John Dobbs, Ph.D., is a Jungian analyst and a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in San Luis Obispo and Santa Monica. He served as a faculty member at the University of Southern California and Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, received earlier training in Zurich and was certified in Los Angeles. His practice includes both analysis and forensic psychology.
