E Unum Pluribus :
The Many Voices of Captain America

Presented by Ronald Schenk, Ph.D., L.C.S.W.

This presentation follows Jung's insight into the existence of a national character or essence expressed through an underlying myth, and raises the question of the nature of "individuation" in relation to such a core element. We will examine some of the ways in which the unconscious factors governing the population as a whole inhibit change on a national level. The narrative which runs through America’s everyday political life and the ways in which it contrasts with the common assumptions American carry about their identity will be explored in terms of Biblical themes such as the Chosen People, the Journey, a Promised Land, and receiving God’s blessings and protection.

Course Objectives:

  • Describe what is meant by a national character
  • Discuss some of the psychological factors which inhibit change on a national level
  • Choose a Biblical theme which amplifies a common assumption that Americans carry about their national identity
