Metaphor and Metamorphosis:
The Importance of Metaphor in the Process of Changing Minds in Therapy

Presented by Margaret Wilkinson, Dip. Ed.

Metaphor is one way in which seeds of change are sown within the mind. Awareness of metaphor comes not only through listening to a patient’s story, but also through attending to the evolving symbolism in dream sequences and the transference and countertransference relationship. In this talk we will explore some of the ways in which new neural connections are made in the minds of both patient and therapist in the process of exploring the realm of the symbolic as it presents in metaphor.

Course Objectives:

  • Describe the importance of metaphor in clinical work
  • Identify ways in which metaphor presents in analytic work
  • Describe how an exploration of the symbolic world supports the development of a secure attachment, adequate affect regulation, and a more coherent sense of self
