While increasing numbers of patients are bringing political material to therapy, most therapists have received limited guidance as to how to engage with it productively, beyond managing patients’ affective states and interpreting. This presentation examines some of the ways in which politically and socially engaged art can inform the clinician’s capacity to hold, amplify, and work therapeutically with politically charged material. Drawing from visual and performative examples, participants will explore the practices, attitudes, and creative strategies of politically engaged artists and consider their relevance to clinical practice.
Learning Objectives:
This course is designed to help you:
- Apply at least one approach derived from politically engaged art practice to the treatment of political material within the analytic or psychotherapeutic frame.
- Give an example of how to work with a patient who brings political material to therapy, drawing on principles from socially engaged art.
