The seminar will introduce Neumann’s theory of early life, including conceptualization and terminology. Some of the areas to be covered include the stages of ego development during childhood, the establishment of the ego-Self axis throughout the primal relationship, as well as the possible disturbances and pathologies. We will describe the development of child analysis within the Jungian circle, including the complementarity between Neumann’s and Fordham's approaches to child development. Utilizing case material, we will discuss the application of Neumann's theory to the practice of child analysis.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe what is meant by the archetypal nature of the mother/child relationship.
- Outline the development of the personality from an archetypal perspective.
- Identify the different stages of ego development and the establishment of the ego-Self axis.
- Give an example of complementarity and similarity between Neumann’s and Fordham’s perspectives.
