Jung understood archetypes as fundamental elements of the human psyche—universal patterns shared across cultures and embedded within the collective unconscious. Interestingly, astrology offers compelling support for the Jungian perspective, suggesting that these archetypes are reflected not only in human psychology, behavior, and experience but also in the cosmos. This lecture introduces the ten primary planetary archetypes, illustrated through the lives of notable individuals and examples from art and music, to deepen our understanding of the symbolic connections between the inner world and the larger universe.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe what is meant by an archetype.
  • Give an example of how a developmental cycle has both a personal and a symbolic archetypal counterpart.

Yvonne Smith Tarnas, MFT, PhD, is a Jungian analyst in private practice in San Francisco and Marin, where she works with adults and couples. Her focus is on the therapeutic process between patient and therapist, and the multiple forms of interaction that are constellated, both conscious and unconscious.  Her dissertation, entitled” Destined Meetings: Synchronicity, Intentionality, and Archetypal Meaning in the Initial Therapy Session”, researches the dynamic of the therapeutic couple specifically as it occurs in the first session and how the frequency of synchronistic occurrences seems to indicate a more healing potential.
