This seminar will further describe the concept of planetary archetypes as a metaphor for identifying and understanding the symbolic and archetypal aspects of Jungian theory and practice. By identifying the emergence of developmental cycles across the lifespan and their archetypal counterparts, we will focus on how these symbolic expressions of the unconscious can manifest in the context of clinical work.

Learning objectives:
  • Describe what is meant by the term synchronicity.
  • Give an example of how synchronicity can manifest in the context of the transference.
  • Give an example of how an understanding of archetypes can inform clinical work.

Yvonne Smith Tarnas, MFT, PhD, is a Jungian analyst in private practice in San Francisco and Marin, where she works with adults and couples. Her focus is on the therapeutic process between patient and therapist, and the multiple forms of interaction that are constellated, both conscious and unconscious.  Her dissertation, entitled” Destined Meetings: Synchronicity, Intentionality, and Archetypal Meaning in the Initial Therapy Session”, researches the dynamic of the therapeutic couple specifically as it occurs in the first session and how the frequency of synchronistic occurrences seems to indicate a more healing potential.
